Stellent has recently introduced a technological model that allows for the control and security of blogs, wikis (popular online documents that enable viewers to edit content, with Wikipedia being a prime example), and RSS, all built on the UCM (Universal Content Management) platform. This can be understood as a security tool for blogs, wikis, and RSS feeds.
Blogs and wikis have rapidly become some of the most engaging services for internet users today. However, there is currently no standard or institution that pays attention to securing this information. Such information is easily accessible, akin to data found on forums, making it vulnerable to public discovery.
This poses significant risks if not properly managed and secured. An employee could inadvertently disclose sensitive information through blogs. Wikis can also become a breeding ground for misinformation if not properly controlled. The online community could quickly descend into chaos without proper management of these platforms. It is estimated that, on average, a new blog or wiki is created every second.
The technology referred to as Stellent’s ECM promises to address these issues. Technically, this technology platform will be widely integrated into existing management frameworks of operating systems, from LDAP to Active Directory, providing significant conveniences for administrators and users alike. While comprehensive information about this new technology is still pending, this marks the first serious discussion regarding the security and management of blogs and wikis, coupled with the introduction of a viable solution.
Stellent fears becoming an “island in the desert,” meaning that their technology may not gain widespread application, leading to isolation and compatibility challenges. Nevertheless, there remains a potential that this technology could serve as a foundational step towards rethinking the Internet in the future.
