According to the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), the Vinasat satellite is expected to be operational in orbit by the second quarter of 2008.
The Vinasat telecommunications satellite launch project was approved by the Prime Minister in October 2005, with VNPT designated as the main investor.
As part of the project, on February 17, a contract for the execution of package number 1, “Consulting for the purchase of Vinasat satellite,” was signed between VNPT and Telesat Canada.
On February 13, 2006, package number 3, “Provision of satellite, launch services, and satellite control station equipment,” was also opened for bids, with three contractors participating: EADS Astrium/Alcatel Alenia Space (France), Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems (USA), and Sumitomo Corporation (Japan).
According to VNPT, the first telecommunications satellite launch project in Vietnam will create opportunities for the Vietnamese telecommunications industry during the integration process, fostering development in both the regional and global contexts. Additionally, when Vinasat becomes operational, it will save tens of millions of USD annually in channel leasing costs for foreign satellites as currently practiced.
The Vinasat satellite will also enable nationwide coverage for television broadcasting and communication services, particularly benefiting remote areas and regions with complex terrain.
