Trends in the physical condition of children, adolescents, and women of childbearing age in Ho Chi Minh City from 1999 to 2005, according to a study by Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hanh – Ho Chi Minh City Nutrition Center, indicate that the average height and weight of elementary school students citywide remained unchanged after two years.
The height of high school boys (ages 15-17) increased by 1.8-2.1 cm over four years, while girls in the same age group grew by 1.5-1.6 cm; the weight of boys and girls in this educational level increased by 2.5-4.3 kg and 0.6-1.9 kg, respectively.
The weight of women of childbearing age increased by 0.9-1.5 kg over six years in the 20-39 age group, but their height remained unchanged (approximately 152 cm). The stature of adolescents in Ho Chi Minh City is still considerably lower compared to global and regional standards.
This report is one of the presentations at the scientific conference titled “Improving Nutrition and Enhancing Growth in Vietnamese People”, organized jointly by the Vietnam Nutrition Association (Vinutas) and Dutch Lady Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City on February 25.
