On March 10th, the competition titled “National Computerized Xiangqi Championship” will be launched nationwide. |
The purpose of this competition is to create a youthful playground in the field of Information Technology (IT), encourage research, and combine technology and algorithms with a popular and useful application in Vietnam, which is the game of Xiangqi (Chinese chess). This competition aims to enhance strategic thinking and creativity among students of the University of Technology and university students in general.
The competition is open to everyone (regardless of age, qualifications, nationality, residence, or gender), and participants can form teams without restrictions on the number of members. Participants (individuals or groups) will write a program to play Xiangqi that runs on a computer (referred to as the Xiangqi playing system). The participants’ Xiangqi playing system will compete against other systems to rank and win prizes. Each team is allowed to submit only one competition program.
Participants can use any hardware (desktop PCs, laptops, mainframe computers, multi-core machines, Macs, machines with special circuits, and dedicated machines). During the competition, participants need to bring their computers to the venue. If the participating computer is a large machine that cannot be transported, players will be allowed to operate the computer remotely to participate in the event.
During the competition, each Xiangqi system will have an operator. The operator does not necessarily have to be the author of the program but can be an authorized person. Two programs will compete against each other through their operators and a real Xiangqi board in the middle.
The determination of victory or defeat and the application of the rules will be based on the actual state of the board (not on the operator’s computer). The rules of the game will follow the Xiangqi regulations issued by the Vietnam Chess Federation.
The championship will take place at the University of Technology – Vietnam National University, Hanoi. After the launch ceremony on the evening of March 10th, participants will continue with technology training sessions, trial matches every quarter, and preliminary rounds, leading up to the finals. The total duration of the national computerized Xiangqi championship is expected to be around 7 months (from March to September 2006).
