Located in a small town in Eastern Netherlands, this remarkable water bridge has left the world in awe.
Going back to the initial phase, driven by the need for transportation in the area, there was a requirement for a long bridge to connect the mainland of the Netherlands with the artificial island of Flevoland. This bridge needed to allow road vehicles to cross while also being high enough to prevent ferries from colliding.
Many designs were discussed, with most proposals focusing on constructing an underwater roadway tunnel. However, the significant time, effort, and budget required for such an option led to its rejection.
Then, one design idea emerged that surpassed all others, even being considered a breakthrough against all laws of physics and architecture. Although it seemed impractical, this idea proved effective and was successfully constructed, becoming one of the most famous structures in the Netherlands: the Veluwemeer Aqueduct.

The main idea is to ensure smooth transportation both above and below water.
Numerous opinions were voiced during discussions, including options for either building an underwater tunnel or a standard bridge. However, these construction projects were deemed too expensive and time-consuming. The core idea remained to facilitate seamless transportation for both land and water traffic without congestion caused by ferries.
This water bridge also includes pedestrian walkways, notably featuring two pedestrian paths on the highway lanes.
Ultimately, a seemingly impossible decision was made: to construct a water bridge. However, building a tunnel would consume too much time and effort, while a traditional road bridge would require a massive budget.
The bold idea of the Veluwemeer Aqueduct emerged as an efficient and cost-effective design that maximized functionality without obstructing traffic for both water and land vehicles. This perfect choice met all the prior requirements.
The bridge was officially inaugurated in 2002, featuring a waterway that is 25 meters long, 19 meters wide, and 3 meters deep. Unlike conventional bridge designs, the Veluwemeer Aqueduct is built on a modern waterway system that allows vehicles to move continuously and seamlessly from land to water. This water bridge also includes pedestrian paths, notably having two pedestrian lanes on the highway. Currently, over 28,000 cars travel beneath this 10-meter-deep bridge, while boats navigate freely thanks to the water covering above the bridge.
