On June 12, the Korea Meteorological Administration announced that a 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at 8:26 AM in Buan County, Jeollabuk Province.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 4 kilometers south-southwest of Buan, at a depth of 8 kilometers.
This earthquake also caused tremors with a magnitude of 5 in the Jeonbuk region, 4 in Jeonnam, and 3 in Gyeongnam, Gwangju, Daejeon, Sejong, Incheon, South Chungcheong, and North Chungcheong.

This was the strongest earthquake to hit South Korea and its surrounding waters this year. According to the National Fire Agency, 198 earthquake reports had been received nationwide (as of 8:40 AM).

Since the earthquake occurred after students had already arrived at school, numerous responses were reported from students indicating that they felt the tremors in class. A netizen who is a student living in Gunsan wrote on X: “Temporary tremors were felt throughout the city of Gunsan. Everyone is currently running out to the playground (school) in shock.”

The Ministry of Interior and Safety of South Korea activated the first emergency phase at the Central Disaster and Safety Headquarters to quickly assess the damage and implement necessary measures. Additionally, a “Warning” earthquake crisis alert was issued. The earthquake crisis alerts are issued in the following order: Attention, Caution, Warning, and Serious.
A man living in Gunsan posted on an online community: “I was lying down, and the bed shook with a rumbling sound. Then I heard a beep (emergency disaster alert), looked at my mobile phone, and when I stepped out, my family sleeping in the living room also said that the ground was shaking.”
Another netizen living in Gwangju Capital City recounted: “At first, I thought it was construction vibrations, but the whole house shook side to side. It seemed like there was a loud clattering sound right before everything started shaking. The shaking lasted about 5 seconds. As soon as it stopped, an emergency disaster message was sent out.”
