Along with the accumulation of dirt, showerheads can quickly become breeding grounds for bacteria, posing potential health risks.
According to the Daily Express, health experts have warned that people should regularly clean their showerheads to prevent serious health conditions. A study conducted by Trade Plumbing found that dirty showerheads could harbor several harmful bacteria that can lead to various health problems.
Specifically, these bacteria include Malassezia and Acanthamoeba, which can cause eye diseases such as blepharitis and, in rare cases, may lead to vision loss. Showerheads can also host Malassezia stricta bacteria, leading to scalp infections, as well as Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria that can result in ear infections.

However, the most concerning bacteria is Legionella. Although “extremely rare,” it is noteworthy because it can cause Legionnaires’ disease – a severe form of pneumonia that can be fatal if untreated.
Expert Peter Clayton from the UK suggests that the best way to prevent the buildup of grime, bacteria, and mold is to regularly clean the showerhead by soaking it in white vinegar. The acid in white vinegar effectively breaks down mineral deposits and removes bacteria from the showerhead.
“However, it is important to ensure you are using distilled white vinegar and not any other type, as brown vinegar can stain your showerhead,” says Clayton. He emphasizes that the showerhead should be fully submerged in vinegar for optimal results.
If you prefer not to detach the showerhead, you can pour white vinegar into a plastic bag and secure it around the showerhead with a rubber band. After 30 minutes, you should gently scrub the entire showerhead with a toothbrush to remove any remaining limescale and bacteria.
Finally, rinse the showerhead thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry before reattaching it. If your showerhead is old or has been in use for a long time, it is advisable to replace it to avoid health risks.
Thus, in addition to the conveniences they offer in daily life, showerheads can also pose hidden health risks. Therefore, using them in a proper and scientific manner will help you maximize their benefits while minimizing health hazards.
