One of the researchers from Japan has reported the development of a robot named RI-MAN, which possesses full functions of hearing, seeing, smelling, and can “carry” individuals, aimed at providing care for the elderly amidst the rising elderly population in the country.

The RI-MAN robot weighs 100 kg and can distinguish between eight different types of smells, follow voice commands, and uses light to recognize signals on human faces.
Standing at 1.58 meters tall, the RI-MAN robot can lift a 12 kg doll and carry a person weighing up to 70 kg.
The RI-MAN is covered with a 0.5 cm thick layer of soft silicone and is equipped with sensors to detect the weight and position of individuals.
Toshiharu Mukai, the head of the research team, stated: “We hope that in the future, the RI-MAN robot will be able to care for the elderly or assist in rehabilitation efforts.”
He further added, “We will develop the ability to detect human health conditions through breath analysis.”
Japan is intensifying its efforts to meet the needs for elderly care to address the challenges posed by having the highest life expectancy in the world.
