According to Master Vu Dinh Thong, a research expert on bats at the Vietnam Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, the only remaining population of the horsehead bat is currently located in Soc Trang Province, with an estimated 3,000 individuals.
Mr. Thong believes that, given the current decline, the risk of extinction for the horsehead bat in Vietnam is very high. Previously, this species was also found in Bach Ma National Park.
The primary reason for the decline of this mammal is the illegal hunting that has taken place in recent years.
