On March 22, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment celebrated World Water Day (March 22) with the theme “Water and Culture” and World Meteorological Day (March 23) with the theme “Disaster Prevention and Mitigation“.
Currently, in the process of socio-economic development, water resources are facing serious threats, such as increasing pollution and depletion of water sources. The primary causes of these issues are rampant deforestation and irrational exploitation and use of resources.
In various regions across the country, water shortages during the dry season are becoming widespread, with increasing scale and severity, particularly in the Central and Central Highlands regions. The level of pollution in rivers is rising, attributed to wastewater from urban areas, industrial zones, the use of chemicals in agricultural production, craft villages, and other domestic activities.
In Vietnam, from 1998 to 2005, there were 47 storms and 26 tropical depressions that occurred in the East Sea, with 23 storms and 10 tropical depressions affecting the weather in Vietnam. In the years 2000, 2001, and 2002, significant flooding caused severe inundation in the Mekong Delta. Major floods, including historical floods, occurred in the central provinces in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, and notably, storms number 7 and 8 in 2005 caused serious damage to both lives and property.
