Researchers analyzed data from nearly 69,000 French women, of whom 3% reported having asthma. They found that women who consumed more tomatoes, carrots, and leafy greens had a lower incidence of asthma.
Specifically, those who ate the most leafy greens (primarily amaranth and lettuce) had a 22% reduced risk of developing asthma, while those who consumed a lot of carrots saw a 20% reduction, and those who ate more tomatoes had an 18% lower risk. These effects were noted even among individuals with other issues such as being overweight, excessive calorie intake, smoking, and those taking vitamins.
Studies indicate that carrots, tomato juice, and amaranth are rich in substances known as carotenoids, some of which convert to vitamin A in the body. This vitamin helps regulate the immune system and maintain respiratory health. Previous research has shown that antioxidants and other nutrients found in plants can help prevent or improve asthma and other allergic conditions.
Experts recommend that everyone should consume plenty of fruits and vegetables daily to maintain health and help prevent asthma.
