Talisman ready for underwater testing (Photo: Ame Info) |
A new device that allows for automatic underwater mine detection has been successfully developed by BAE Systems, a British military contractor.
The device, named Talisman, operates based on computer software that enables it to detect mines completely autonomously without any need for guidance.
Talisman can dive underwater and travel several kilometers to reach a minefield. Once it detects a target, it will surface to signal the control center and await further instructions.
Afterward, it will dive back down and neutralize the mine using a small explosive charge. Talisman is about the size of a large car, capable of diving to depths of 300 meters, and can roll and rotate 360 degrees. Under optimal conditions, it can achieve speeds of up to 9 km/h.
