Although Windows Vista will officially launch early next year, Microsoft has already begun preparations for hardware compatibility for its flagship product.
Starting next month, some PCs will bear the slogan “Windows Vista capable.”
Microsoft is actively working with all members and hardware partners to produce “branded” Windows Vista computers.
In order to display this logo and slogan on products, all computers must undergo rigorous testing and design standards. A part of this campaign is to help customers understand which hardware will perform best with Windows Vista once it is released.
While the specific configurations for these computers are not yet known, early disclosures indicate that a computer aiming to run Windows Vista effectively will require at least 512 MB of RAM, along with the latest motherboard and CPU supporting DirectX 9c.
Of course, to achieve what Microsoft refers to as “Capable,” there will be various types of computers suitable for different price points. Microsoft has stated that the minimum required configuration will only be adequate for running Windows Home Basic; however, they have not yet disclosed what that minimum configuration is. All information will become available once the advertising campaign kicks off.
