“You cannot see the Great Wall of China from space,” declared astronaut Fei Junlong to students in Shanghai on April 3rd, which may very well mark the conclusion of a myth that has persisted for decades.
Fei Junlong, along with fellow astronaut Nie Haisheng, are the two most recent astronauts from China to venture into space aboard the Shenzhou VI spacecraft, which was China’s second crewed space mission. He made this statement during the opening ceremony of the Space Exhibition at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.
“We cannot see the Great Wall of China from space,” Fei Junlong stated.
For a long time, it was believed that the Great Wall was the only man-made structure visible from space, despite many American astronauts refuting this claim.
The Chinese Space Exhibition will be open until April 16th. More than 100 articles related to the Shenzhou VI mission—significant in enhancing China’s image in the world and showcasing the country’s immense creativity and innovation—are also displayed at the exhibition.
