The U.S. Coast Guard is set to launch a new technology that will accurately determine the location of missing boaters at sea. The new technology, named Rescue 21, operates using a network of antennas located on land. When a boater sends out a distress signal, Rescue 21 can receive the signal and immediately notify rescue teams of the exact location of the vessel.
A rescue expert noted that typically, lost individuals often provide inaccurate descriptions of their location amidst the vast ocean, which poses significant challenges for rescue operations. This is compounded by instances of false distress calls. With its ability to pinpoint the location of the missing vessel, Rescue 21 can differentiate between genuine and fake emergency signals. Rescue 21 is scheduled for testing on April 10 before its official launch this summer.
