The total area of Bach Ma National Park is being expanded by approximately over 15,000 hectares, with 3,600 hectares towards Quang Nam Province, including sub-zones 42, 52, and 56. The remaining area is towards the mountainous Nam Dong District, part of Thua Thien-Hue Province, increasing the current total area of the park from over 22,000 hectares to more than 37,000 hectares.
The government has also assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with the People’s Committee of Quang Nam Province and directed Bach Ma National Park to develop an investment project for the expansion of the area, construction, and development of Bach Ma National Park, for approval by the relevant authorities as per regulations.
The construction of the investment project for the expansion of area, construction, and development of Bach Ma National Park must be based on inheriting and integrating existing programs and projects that have been implemented in Bach Ma National Park, aiming to save costs and enhance the effectiveness of the investment in the park’s construction and development.
The expansion of Bach Ma National Park will facilitate better conservation efforts in the core and buffer zones while promoting sustainable ecotourism development.
Bach Ma National Park features up to 10,000 hectares of tropical monsoon and subtropical monsoon forests, housing many valuable hardwood species such as Chò chỉ, Kiền, Giẻ hương, Cẩm lai, Trắc, and Agarwood. The forest is home to over 1,400 plant species, including 86 species listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book, with at least three endemic species named after Bach Ma.
The fauna in this area is also rich with many rare and endemic species. To date, scientists have identified 931 animal species in Bach Ma. Among these, there are 68 species listed in the Vietnam and global Red Data Books, such as the Swinhoe’s Pheasant, the Purple-breasted Pheasant, the White pheasant, the Five-colored Langur, and the Black Gibbon with white cheeks. Notably, scientists have also discovered several new mammal species such as the Saola, the Truong Son Muntjac, and the Large-antlered Muntjac.
