The selection of the winning bidder marks the first step, as city officials will engage with Google today to discuss the project details.
In light of this victory, Google expressed great excitement. The company’s decision to partner with Earthlink just before the final bidding round proved to be a winning strategy. The alliance between the two companies significantly outperformed other competing bids.
San Francisco officials stated that they hope the city will become a massive wireless hotspot by the end of this year. In this bidding process, all funding for the project will come from Google and Earthlink’s budgets, with the city government not having to spend a dime.
In return, Google aims to recoup its investment and seek profits from online advertising, while Earthlink hopes to generate additional revenue from users who want faster internet connections.
According to the agreement, San Francisco will allow Google and Earthlink to utilize public locations and high poles throughout the city to install antennas and other necessary equipment. Previously, Google had also expressed interest in providing free wireless services in Silicon Valley, where its headquarters is located.
