There are two possibilities that lead to twins: One is fraternal twins, or dizygotic twins, and the second is identical twins, or monozygotic twins.
Fraternal twins occur when two separate eggs from the mother are released at the same time and fertilized by two different sperm from the father.
As a result, two zygotes are formed and develop into two distinct embryos. The two children can be of the same gender or different genders and only resemble each other like any other siblings.
In the case of identical twins, a single fertilized egg unexpectedly splits in two during the early stages of development, with each half developing into an embryo, ultimately resulting in two children.
Identical twins will be completely the same in terms of gender, physical appearance, blood type, and antigen characteristics. In many cases, even their parents cannot distinguish between the two children.
Not only can twins be born, but there are also cases of triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, and even sextuplets.
