Everyone knows that milk, various types of fish, carrots, onions, and other foods have brain-boosting properties. However, there are also certain foods that can negatively affect brain function. Some studies have shown that regularly consuming the following five types of foods can lead to brain sluggishness and even a decline in cognitive abilities.
1. Salty Foods:

The human body requires a very low amount of salt; adults need only up to 7g per day, while children need less than 4g. Regularly consuming excessively salty foods can damage arteries and affect blood supply to brain tissues, leading to a deficiency of blood and oxygen for brain cells over prolonged periods, which ultimately results in cognitive decline and early brain degeneration.
2. Foods Containing Lead: Lead is a major “killer” of brain cells because it can replace iron, calcium, and zinc in the nervous system. Foods containing lead, such as popcorn, puffed rice, and salted eggs, should not be consumed in large quantities.
3. Foods Containing Aluminum: According to the World Health Organization’s recommendations, the body should absorb no more than 60mg of lead per day. Some fried foods, like deep-fried dough, contain inorganic lead, so consuming 50-100g of such foods daily can exceed the allowable lead content.
4. Foods High in Oxidized Fats: Foods fried at temperatures above 200°C or exposed to intense sunlight, such as squid, roasted duck, and roasted birds, contain high levels of oxidized fats. These substances can accumulate in the body, damaging various metabolic enzymes and leading to early brain degeneration.
5. Foods High in Sugar and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): Excessive sugar consumption can harm brain cells. While small amounts of MSG may not be harmful, it is best for pregnant women and young children to avoid it. MSG can lead to brain cell death in infants and cause zinc deficiency in fetuses, negatively impacting children’s cognitive development.
