Japanese company TDK is distributing blank Blu-ray discs to retail outlets. The single-layer (recordable) 25 GB discs will retail for nearly $20, while the multi-layer (rewritable) discs of the same capacity will cost over $24.
Later this year, TDK will release Blu-ray discs capable of storing data on both sides, increasing storage capacity to 50 GB. The recordable version will be priced around $48, while the rewritable version will be approximately $60.
According to TDK, the product prices will gradually decrease as production lines for the new format become more widespread. Meanwhile, Blu-ray players are not expected to hit the market until at least the end of this year.
In contrast, Toshiba, Microsoft, Intel, and other companies supporting HD DVD argue that the investment costs for HD DVD are lower.
For consumers, this new generation DVD format war leaves them confused about which format to choose. Additionally, they must ensure they purchase compatible electronic devices for the movies they wish to watch.
