A survey in the United States shows that almost everyone wants immediate results on the first page when searching online.
Two research companies, Jupiter Research and iProspect, found that most people will only look at a maximum of three pages of search results. The survey also revealed that one-third of users believe that companies appearing on the first page are the leading brands.
The researchers studied 2,369 internet users in the United States. 62% clicked on at least one result on the first page, an increase of 14% compared to 2002. About 90% clicked on a link from the search results, up 9% from 2002. 41% searched using different software or changed their terms if they did not find what they wanted on the first page.
iProspect’s president, Robert Murray, stated that the survey results highlight the importance of appearing on the first page of search results. He noted that the performance of search software has improved alongside user skills.
“They know what they want and want to find it immediately, and most want to see results right on the first page,” Murray said.
“Businesses revamping their websites or creating new ones need to understand that if people can’t find them, no one will look at them.”
Mr. Danny Sullivan, the editor of Search Engine Watch, stated that the survey results confirm what people already know: “It is essential to appear on the first page because that is where the most traffic is.”
“This is also a wake-up call for search software companies to reevaluate their results.”
“Companies looking to increase their consumer attraction need to have a good website, with plenty of text and many quality links on it.”
