Answers

Question 1: Answer A – 48: In Vietnam, bays with an area of less than 50 km2 are considered small, while coastal bays have an area of 50 km2 or more. According to a map with a scale of 1:100,000, there are a total of 48 bays along the coastline of Vietnam, covering an area of approximately 4,000 km2.

Question 2: Answer A – 2: The South China Sea has two major bays: the Gulf of Tonkin and the Gulf of Thailand. These bays hold strategic importance for the countries involved, including Vietnam, China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia. The Gulf of Tonkin is one of the largest bays in the world, with an area of about 126,250 km2 (36,000 square nautical miles), the widest point measuring approximately 310 km (176 nautical miles), and the narrowest point at the mouth of the bay measuring around 207.4 km (112 nautical miles). The Gulf of Thailand, also known as the Gulf of Siam, is a semi-closed sea covering approximately 320,000 km2, bordered by the coastlines of four countries: Thailand (1,560 km), Vietnam (230 km), Malaysia (150 km), and Cambodia (460 km). The northern tip of the Gulf is the Bangkok Bay area at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River. The boundary of the Gulf of Thailand is determined by a line drawn from Cape Ca Mau in Vietnam to Kota Baru in Malaysia. The Gulf is about 830 km long and has an average width of 385 km.

Question 3: Answer B – 4 countries: The Gulf of Thailand (also known as the Gulf of Siam) is a semi-closed sea with an area of about 300,000 km2, bordered by the coastlines of four countries: Thailand (1,560 km), Vietnam (230 km), Malaysia (150 km), and Cambodia (460 km).

Question 4: Answer A – About 500-410 million years ago. Ha Long Bay was once a deep marine area during the Ordovician-Silurian periods (about 500-410 million years ago); a shallow marine area during the Carboniferous-Permian periods (about 340-250 million years ago); and a coastal sea at the end of the Paleogene and the beginning of the Neogene periods (about 26-20 million years ago), undergoing several marine transgressions in the Anthropocene (about 2 million years ago). During the Triassic period (240-195 million years ago), the Ha Long Bay area was characterized by wet marshes and lush coniferous forests, accumulating over generations.

Question 5: Answer A – Ha Long Bay: According to the Government’s electronic information portal, Ha Long Bay contains the most islands in our country, with approximately 2,000 islands of various sizes. Ha Long Bay is formed by thousands of limestone islands scattered amid emerald waters, creating a stunning landscape that showcases the exquisite artistry of nature accumulated over centuries. The system of mysterious limestone caves hidden beneath stone pillars covered by tropical vegetation exudes a pristine and mystical charm, along with traces of Earth’s historical development that attract tourists from around the world to admire and explore. With its unique and aesthetically significant natural landscape, Ha Long Bay was first recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage site in 1994. In 2000, Ha Long Bay was once again honored as a testament to the tectonic processes of the Earth over billions of years, showcasing unparalleled geological and geomorphological values. The formation of the Ha Long Bay natural landscape is thus closely linked to distinctive cultural and historical values.

Question 6: Answer B – True. The UNESCO World Natural Heritage site Ha Long Bay is dubbed “the stone wonder rising high into the sky”, also known as “the bay where dragons descended.”

Question 7: The correct answer is Answer B – 3. At 5:40 PM on September 16, 2023 local time (which is 9:40 PM on September 16, 2023 Vietnam time) in the capital city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially recognized Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago as a World Natural Heritage site. This marks the first time two World Natural Heritage sites have been recognized as World Heritage sites located in two provinces and cities of Vietnam. Previously, Ha Long Bay was recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage site twice in 1994 and 2000.

Question 8: Answer B – 775. The recognized heritage area in Ha Long Bay (the core area) covers 434 km², shaped like a triangle with three points: Dau Go Island (to the West), Ba Ham Lake (to the South), and Cong Tay Island (to the East), including 775 islands with numerous caves and beaches.
