On April 20, 2006, in Hanoi, Bach Mai Hospital held a seminar on the topic of “The Effectiveness of Heroin Relapse Treatment using Abernil.”
The research results evaluating the situation of heroin relapse after stopping treatment with Abernil at the Mental Health Institute showed that: If the treatment process is strictly followed, only 5.99% of individuals relapse.
The study was conducted on 274 individuals who received outpatient antagonistic treatment with Abernil (Naltrexone) and were discharged between June 2002 and June 2005.
However, in practice, among those 274 individuals, 167 relapsed, accounting for 60.95%, indicating a high relapse rate among those who did not adhere to the treatment process.
The community-based antagonistic treatment with Abernil not only proved to be highly effective but also significantly reduced the relapse rate after stopping treatment (still at 60.95%).
The longer the treatment duration, the lower the relapse risk. Based on actual results, scientists have recommended maintaining antagonistic treatment for at least 12 months; limiting the influence of addicted peers; and when there is a risk of relapse, it is essential to immediately return to treatment. After a few such instances, the chances of recovery will significantly increase.
