The test launch of Space One – a startup based in Japan – has failed, as the rocket exploded shortly after leaving the launch pad.
This morning (March 13), Space One – a Japanese startup in the aerospace sector – conducted the launch of the KAIROS 1 rocket, carrying an artificial satellite.
If successful, Space One would have become the first private company from Japan to successfully launch a satellite into orbit.
During the preparation phase, the project engineers did not detect any signs of abnormalities. The four-stage rocket, measuring 18 meters in length and weighing 23 tons, was fired and launched as scheduled at 11:01 AM (local time).
However, the rocket exploded just seconds after liftoff, leaving behind a thick cloud of smoke and sparks. Debris from the rocket fell onto a nearby mountain, while some parts landed in the sea.
The rocket exploded just seconds after liftoff.
On the company’s website, Space One stated that the details regarding the cause of the incident are currently under investigation.
This incident is considered a significant setback for Japan’s efforts to penetrate the potentially lucrative satellite launch market.
In July 2023, a rocket engine named Epsilon S from Japan also exploded during testing.
