The National Bank of Cameroon and the Polish Mint Mennica Polska have recently developed the UFO MP-1766 coin – the world’s first legal flying coin.
According to Oddity Central, the name of this innovative coin is inspired by the shape of a flying saucer and its ability to hover in the air like an alien spacecraft. The number 1766 reflects the founding year of the Polish Mint and the denomination of the coin, which is 1,766 francs Cameroon (approximately $2.91).

This coin can be used legally in Cameroon. Moreover, the value of this tiny technical marvel is significantly higher than its official denomination. With a limited edition of only 510 coins worldwide, the UFO MP-1766 has a pre-order price of over $1,000. The prototype coin was unveiled at a technical forum in Berlin last week and is set to be released in the upcoming spring.
Mr. Lukasz Karda, Director of Production Planning and Engineering at the Polish Mint Mennica Polska, told Gazeta Wyborcza: “We assembled a team of experts from various departments of the agency, including marketing and production. The idea was spontaneous: ‘Let’s create a flying coin.’ Initially, this idea seemed like an interesting joke. But as each day passed, we realized that we had accomplished the task. We found the right technology, and it worked. The process went smoothly, and production was quick.”
Mennica Polska did not provide details about the technology behind the UFO MP-1766, but according to scant information, this improved coin has a small motor attached inside and is activated by the magnetic field created between the coin and the special structure that accompanies it. This allows the coin to fly up and rotate slowly like a flying saucer.
In addition to its ability to fly and its futuristic design, the UFO MP-1766 also features glow-in-the-dark components, enhancing its impressive effect.
The Polish Mint Mennica Polska is the only private agency authorized to produce coins and investment products in Poland. It is also the sole producer of commemorative coins issued by the National Bank of Poland.
To make the UFO MP-1766 a legal tender rather than just a flying piece of silver, Mennica Polska decided to collaborate with a “special” central bank.
“We couldn’t simply create a coin for official circulation, as only central banks have the authority to issue currency. Therefore, there is a business model to contact special foreign banks, in this case, the Bank of Cameroon,” Mr. Karda stated.
