A new video posted on social media has left viewers astonished – quite literally – as they struggle to determine whether the horse in it is approaching the camera or moving away. The video has amassed 15 million views, with each viewer offering a different perspective.
With every event, people observing from different angles tend to think differently. In this case, however, all viewers of the horse video are perplexed about the horse’s direction.
Since its posting, the video has been viewed over 15 million times and has received more than 2 million likes. It has also sparked intense debate: some viewers claim the horse is coming closer, while others insist it is moving away.
Interestingly, the majority of viewers reported that they changed their minds continuously while watching. At times, they believed the horse was approaching, and at other moments, they thought it was going in the opposite direction.

What direction do you think the horse is heading?
Newsweek reached out to the owner of the horse, Alesia Willard from British Columbia, Canada, to get the accurate answer. It turns out the horse is named Rudnik and is 5 years old.
Alesia described Rudnik as having a beautiful, glossy black mane with a matching coat, and she only noticed how dark his fur was when she saw him running on the snow.
“I watched him for a while and found it very difficult to tell if he was coming closer or moving away,” Alesia told Newsweek.
Alesia confirmed that in the video, Rudnik is moving away. However, she also mentioned that it took her some time to realize this, and at one point, she even thought the horse was going back, but that was not the case.
At certain moments, it looks as if the horse is going in both directions. (Photo: Alesia Willard).
If you didn’t catch it at first, that’s perfectly normal, as this video has fooled the vision of many. In fact, some of the most illusion-inducing images often feature strong color contrasts between deep blacks and bright whites. The black horse trotting on white snow creates such a naturally contrasting image.
