The man from Yorkshire has captured the world’s attention not for his creative ideas or outstanding viewpoints, but for his remarkable nose, the longest in the world.
Thomas Wadhouse, also known as Thomas Wedders, boasts an astonishing nose measuring 19.05 cm in length. He earned the title of the person with the largest nose in the world, a record that remains unbroken to this day.
This man, who lived in the 18th century in Yorkshire (England), attracted attention wherever he went due to his distinctive appearance. However, little is known about his mysterious life.
The Reason for His Long Nose

The reason behind Thomas’s unusually long nose remains a mystery to this day. There have been many theories regarding the origins of his long nose.
Some researchers believe that this abnormality may have resulted from a rare disease that affected cognitive development during early childhood.
Additionally, some rumors suggest that it could be the consequence of inbreeding, which may have caused facial deformities. His parents might have been siblings, and this genetic mixing could explain his unusual nose. However, the true cause remains unclear.
Mysterious Life
The distinctive feature of his face played a significant role in elevating him to celebrity status. Despite this, Thomas led a very private life.
The magazine Strand published an article in 1896 stating that his chin was too weak and his eyebrows too low. The reasons behind Thomas’s decision to appear before crowds and perform in a circus remain ambiguous.
Some believe he thought he could make a lot of money and could not miss such an opportunity. Others suggest that his actions were inspired by someone else.
Thomas passed away at the age of 50, leaving no records about the mysteries surrounding him. Currently, a wax replica of his remarkable nose can be found at the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not museum in London (England).
The Guinness World Records has recognized Thomas Wadhouse as the man with the longest nose in human history. On their website, they explain: “Historical records state that Thomas Wedders, who lived in England in the 1770s and was a member of a bizarre traveling circus, had a nose measuring 19.05 cm.”
So, who holds the record for the longest nose still alive today? According to the Guinness World Records, the current record holder for the longest nose is Mehmet Özyürek from Artvin (Turkey). He has an impressive nose measuring approximately 8.7 cm.
Mr. Özyürek has stated that he is very satisfied with his nose and has no intention of changing it. His unusually long nose is a hereditary condition, but doctors have yet to provide an explanation. Both his father and uncle also have similarly large noses.
