Meteorologists describe the heavy snowfall that Moscow is experiencing as a “black snowstorm” – a phenomenon that occurs when snowflakes fall nearly parallel to the ground.
According to RT, “black snowstorms” are a common occurrence in the Far North, where snow falls nearly parallel to the ground, reducing visibility to about 100 meters.
This snowfall began on November 26 and intensified during the night. The FOBOS weather center reports that the amount of snowfall has reached 35% of the average monthly total. It is forecasted that the heavy snowfall in Moscow will continue until November 28.

Roman Vilfand, the director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, warns that this will be one of the strongest snowfalls in November. According to Channel One (Russia), the last time Moscow experienced similar extreme weather conditions at the end of autumn was in 1977.
Snow accumulation of 16 centimeters within a few hours has caused traffic jams in the Russian capital. The Moscow Department of Transportation has urged residents to limit the use of personal vehicles and switch to public transport. Up to 8 flights have been canceled and 40 flights delayed at Moscow airports due to the weather.
The Moscow authorities have deployed 1,500 workers and various specialized equipment to clear the snow from the streets.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that this weather condition will continue until November 28, with an additional snowfall of at least 4 centimeters expected. He also warned of strong winds in Moscow.
