Scientists recognized as the world’s most highly cited researchers (Highly Cited Researchers – HCR) for 2023 were announced by Clarivate, an international analytics company specializing in scientific data, on November 21.
Among the list of 6,849 researchers, 4 scientists are based in Vietnam. These include Prof. Dr. Hoàng Anh Tuấn from Đông Á University, another from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology; Prof. Dr. Trần Xuân Bách from Hanoi Medical University; Dr. Võ Nguyễn Đại Việt from Nguyễn Tất Thành University; and Prof. Dr. Võ Xuân Vinh from Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics.
Of these, Prof. Dr. Trần Xuân Bách is also recognized among the top 1% most cited researchers by Clarivate in 2022.
Additionally, several Vietnamese-origin researchers working abroad were noted, including: Nguyễn Minh Hồng from the University of Pittsburgh (USA); Nguyễn H. Long and Nguyễn T. Nhu from Harvard University (USA); Trần Phan Lam Sơn from Texas Tech University (USA); Bùi Quang Minh from the Australian National University; Đặng Văn Chí from the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (USA); and Đinh Cao Thắng from Queen’s University (Canada).

The Highly Cited Researchers list is published annually to highlight the most influential researchers in their respective fields. This year, the list includes 6,849 scientists from over 1,300 organizations across 67 countries and regions. According to this list, the United States leads with 2,669 individuals, followed by China with 1,275. In Southeast Asia, Singapore has 109, Malaysia has 10, and Thailand has 3.
On Clarivate’s website, it is stated that to be included in the list, each researcher must be an author of papers that are in the top 1% of citations in their field, considering articles published within the last 10 years indexed in the Web of Science.
The evaluation and selection process is conducted by an internal research team at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) within Clarivate, which utilizes data and analysis from bibliometric experts and data scientists. Specifically, based on the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), a computational method that analyzes and selects from Web of Science data over a 10-year span, Clarivate Analytics identifies the most cited researchers across 21 fields.

However, the number of citations is not the only criterion for selection. Bar Veinstein, an expert from Clarivate, mentioned that the preliminary list of scientists is based on citation activity and is refined using qualitative analysis and expert evaluation. The review team also identifies any “abnormalities” such as excessive self-citation and manipulative tactics to inflate citation counts, which will result in disqualification from the list.
Since its initial publication in 2002, being included in the Highly Cited Researchers list signifies that a scientist’s work is highly regarded for its significance and impact.
