According to ABC News, Rafi Bahalul, a man from Egypt, encountered this strange stone while swimming in the sea in the morning. Rafi Bahalul stated: “I saw it after just swimming a few meters. I thought it looked like a slab with a rather unusual shape, so I dove down and brought it up.”
Later, Jacob Sharvit, head of the Israel Antiquities Authority, told ABC News that this peculiar slab is actually an ancient stone anchor from Egypt, dating back 3,400 years.
According to archaeologists, in fact, this anchor is a small part of a large relief, intricately decorated. After the relief was damaged for some reason, a piece of it was carved and repurposed as an anchor.
It is possible that sailors lost the anchor, or that the ship using it sank off the coast of the Mediterranean, causing it to drift to this beach.
Ancient Egyptian characters, used around 5,000 years ago, are also carved on this anchor. Some phrases on the Egyptian anchor have been translated to mean: “The stone lies in the hands of Seshat (the goddess of creation in ancient Egypt), ‘love, home, and books'”.
