Instead of purchasing a trendy, inexpensive outfit that is worn a few times and quickly discarded, this future garment can actually change its design in the blink of an eye.
The special interactive dress was recently unveiled at the Adobe Max 2023 technology conference in Los Angeles, USA. Scientist Christine Dierk surprised the audience as her shimmering silver dress continuously “transformed” with just a push of a button.

Featuring countless small pieces arranged closely together like fish scales, Dierk presented the knee-length strapless dress as a digital product that “brings fabric closer to life.”
This dress utilizes polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) technology, which is commonly used for smart windows.
This low-energy material can be cut into any shape and flexibly diffuse light.
Christine Dierk explains that the dress can move with the wearer, meaning this design will “sway” in the direction the wearer moves.
Project Primrose – the technology behind this dress – allows the wearer to create custom designs using Adobe Firefly, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Stock, and Adobe Illustrator.
These animations are then projected onto the garment’s surface at the push of a button. Dierk stated, “Unlike traditional clothing, Primrose allows me to refresh my look in an instant.”
The Adobe researcher also demonstrated how various designs, from stripes to diamond patterns, can be projected onto the dress.
She also introduced an alternative switching mode that does not require button presses, instead relying on embedded sensors. This means that designs can change automatically and also reflect the wearer’s movements.
Dierk said: “Fashion doesn’t have to be static; it can move and even be interactive.”
There is hope that this technology could eventually be widely adopted, allowing people to change the design of bags or home furnishings with just a button press.
Currently, there is no detailed information on production costs or whether it will be available for sale in the market. However, the dress has already gained significant attention on social media, exciting many with the prospect of one day being able to “download” a dress design from their favorite designer.
Adobe Max 2023 is regarded as the world’s largest creative conference, showcasing a plethora of technologies and experimental prototypes.
