Weather and meteorology experts indicate that this event comes as China has been experiencing various extreme weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and flooding over the past few weeks, urging residents in coastal areas near the Yellow Sea off Jiangsu to remain particularly vigilant against strong winds.
The tornado in Jiangsu has been described as short but extremely violent. Based on videos and images shared on social media, it can be seen that within just a few brief minutes, the tornado swept through the streets, overturning many vehicles, downing power lines, and sending debris flying, with much of it scattered across the streets of Xuzhou, a city in northern Jiangsu Province.
The terrifying tornado significantly damaged the streets.
Sharing about the incident, a witness stated: “I was standing at my door when I saw the wind, solar panels, and trees flying through the air. In those two minutes, I was frozen in shock.”
CCTV reported that the two areas most heavily impacted were Xuzhou and Yancheng. Consequently, the tornado resulted in 5 deaths and 4 serious injuries in these areas. Additionally, it caused damage to 1,646 homes and devastated many acres of crops, creating a scene reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic landscape.
Previously, many provinces in China had also endured prolonged heavy rains, leading to floods and landslides that resulted in numerous casualties and property destruction.
