An environmental organization has warned that half of the world’s coral reefs could disappear within the next 40 years.
The World Wildlife Fund released a report on October 26, stating that global warming is the primary cause of the destruction of coral reefs.
The organization noted that rising ocean temperatures are killing the types of algae that provide food and color to corals. This trend is expected to continue steadily over the next 50 years.
They also estimated that to date, 20% of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed, and another 30% will be severely damaged if immediate action is not taken to save them.
