The territories of England overseas are increasingly expanding. According to researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), a volcanic eruption on Montagu Island in the South Atlantic has expanded the surface of this ice-covered island by 200,000 square meters since the end of October.
On this tiny island, which is 12 kilometers wide, Mount Belinda has been rumbling for many years and erupted at the end of September. Over the past four weeks, the volcano has expelled half a million cubic meters of lava and continues to be active.
Located south of the South Sandwich Islands, Montagu Island is covered in ice, with some areas having melted due to the volcanic eruption. Researchers intend to conduct closer observations of this eruption phenomenon occurring beneath a dense layer of ice using aircraft, aiming to understand the interactions between hot rock and ice.
