Seoul monitors information regarding the stem cell scandal |
While questions regarding the stem cell research conducted by South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk remain unresolved, new allegations have emerged today related to the stem cell issue.
The allegations raise concerns about the authenticity of a paper published in the journal Science in February of last year, in which Hwang claimed to have successfully created stem cells from cloned embryos for the first time. A group of young South Korean scientists has accused that the image of the stem cells published in Hwang’s article is identical to an image of stem cells from MizMedi Hospital, which had previously been submitted to another journal (Stem Cells). One scientist questioned: “If you were the first in the world to successfully develop stem cells from cloned embryos, would you really take a picture of a normal stem cell to prove it?“
Earlier, during a press conference on December 16, Seoul National University announced the establishment of a special investigative committee to examine the authenticity of the stem cell research conducted by Professor Hwang Woo-suk. Although Hwang continues to assert that the results of his 2004 research are entirely authentic, the situation is increasingly turning against him.
