The man likely contracted the disease while in England, but his symptoms only began after he had moved to Houston, USA. “This is evidence that the outbreak is still ongoing in England,” said Lawrence B. Schonberger, an epidemiology expert.
According to officials, the man had been living in Houston for four years and returned to England earlier this year.
Schonberger noted that humans contract mad cow disease by consuming the brain or nervous tissue of infected animals. The previous case in the U.S. involved a woman from England who was living in Florida. She died last year and was also believed to have contracted the disease while still in England.
Statistics indicate that over 170 people have died or exhibited fatal symptoms related to mad cow disease.
