Unlike private jets, superyachts are not common means of transportation. However, according to Entrepreneur, wealthy individuals prefer to invest in massive ocean-going vessels.
The reason is that these superyachts “allow the ultra-rich to showcase their wealth.” Tech billionaires such as Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, Sergey Brin, and Larry Page are no exception to this trend as each owns several “floating resorts.”
Jeff Bezos’ Nearly 130m Yacht
Koru – the 127m superyacht valued at nearly $500 million owned by the Amazon founder, made a significant splash when it launched last May. Koru features three decks, including one with a swimming pool and three enormous masts. However, the yacht will cost up to $24 million per year to operate. It accommodates 18 guests and has a crew of 40, with interior design similar to that of Barry Diller’s yacht.
Sergey Brin’s Luxurious Yacht
Billionaire Sergey Brin currently owns a yacht valued at over $76 million named Dragonfly. Measuring over 73m, it features an outdoor cinema, a hot tub, and a sun deck that can convert into a dance floor. This yacht can host 14 guests along with 16 crew members.
Built in Australia by SilverYachts and delivered in 2009, Dragonfly is primarily constructed from aluminum and is regarded as one of the most efficient superyachts with a speed of 22 knots. Additionally, it is noted for its fuel efficiency, consuming only 360 liters at a speed of 18 knots. During its maiden voyage from Perth to Dubai, the yacht set records for speed and fuel efficiency.
Dragonfly is also well-regarded for its contributions to disaster relief efforts in Vanuatu following Cyclone Pam in 2015. Reports indicate that Dragonfly and its crew delivered 62 tons of fresh water to shore, treated over 250 patients, assisted with three medical evacuations, and helped build shelters in several villages while clearing numerous helicopter landing sites.
Larry Ellison’s Japanese-style Superyacht
Musashi, Larry Ellison’s superyacht valued at over $112 million, spans nearly 90m and is named after a legendary samurai warrior. Many who have stepped aboard describe Musashi as an inspiring synthesis of Western artistic elements and Japanese design. This luxury superyacht, designed for the ultra-wealthy, boasts numerous standout amenities, including an elevator, spa, swimming pool, outdoor gym, and cinema. Additionally, Musashi is equipped with air conditioning throughout and incorporates stabilizers to ensure comfort for all guests.
Larry Page’s Yacht Senses
Google co-founder Larry Page also owns a 60m yacht valued at $45 million named Senses. He purchased this yacht in 2011 from a New Zealand entrepreneur, which features a private club, an artificial beach, dining areas, and a helicopter pad.
Steve Jobs’ Yacht Venus
The late Apple CEO Steve Jobs also owned a yacht named Venus, measuring 78m and valued at $130 million. Upon his passing in 2011, Venus was inherited by his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs.
Eric Schmidt’s Oasis Yacht
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt also owns a 60m yacht named Oasis. This yacht comes equipped with a swimming pool, nightclub, and gym. Schmidt purchased the vessel in 2009 for $72.3 million.
Jim Clark’s Yacht Collection
Jim Clark, co-founder of Netscape, boasts an impressive collection of yachts. Over the past 30 years, he has owned Hanuman valued at $18 million, Athena valued at $95 million, Hyperion valued at over $50 million, and another yacht named Comanche whose price is undisclosed.
