Security experts are currently warning about a new computer worm that is spreading rapidly across the Internet using various phishing techniques.
This new strain of worm can impersonate messages claiming to provide users with nude images of the famous actress Paris Hilton, or threatening legal action…
The Bagle-DO worm spreads through emails with subject lines such as “Pay your debts before we come to you“, “Call your lawyer immediately“, “Lawsuit against you“, or “We await your response“.
These emails urge users to open attachments titled “lawsuit.exe”, “explanation.exe”, or “documents.exe”. If users open these files, the Bagle-DO worm will infiltrate their computers and continue to spread by harvesting email addresses available on the infected machine.
“Anyone receiving such emails should remain calm and understand that they are not genuinely targeting you or your company. Unfortunately, sometimes users feel compelled to inform the senders of these emails that they have sent them to the wrong address,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at security firm Sophos.
“If someone opens the attachment, they risk enabling the Bagle-DO worm to spread even further.”
If the infected computer has file-sharing software installed, the Bagle-DO worm will automatically install itself in shared folders under fake names containing nude images of actresses Kate Beckinsale, Paris Hilton, or singer Britney Spears.
