The camera captured the strange movements of a snake – instantly evoking thoughts of some mysterious dance.
To many, snakes are dangerous and frightening creatures. However, they also possess many mysteries that pique curiosity. A prime example is when they perform strange “dances” for no apparent reason, as seen in the clip below.
In the video, a boomslang snake is seen moving back and forth on a concrete path in a perplexing manner. It raises itself high off the ground and suddenly slams its head and upper body down, appearing to hurt itself.
In another scene, it leaps into the air, twisting in several loops and focusing on the “dance” to the extent of disregarding everything else around it.
Some witnesses believe the snake is performing this strange dance to attract prey or a mate. Meanwhile, others suggest that the pavement and ground may be too hot, causing the snake to adapt by jumping to avoid prolonged contact.
However, there are also many arguments indicating that the snake might be experiencing health issues.
“I’m sure the snake was injured by a vehicle or some animal, causing damage to its nervous system, resulting in disorientation,” stated a social media user after watching the video.
“There’s nothing strange here. The snake is in pain, possibly due to physical injury or parasites. It looks pitiful in the way it moves,” another user shared.
According to Susheel Barath – a biologist, snakes often exhibit strange behaviors that science has yet to explain. Interestingly, they can “dance” to music or when excited to attract mates.
Additionally, there seems to be no scientific evidence suggesting that snakes perceive pain in the same way humans do.
For instance, when something is pressing down on them, snakes usually react by attacking immediately rather than showing signs of pain. However, most snake species can maintain consciousness and even sense their bodies for a long time after being decapitated, due to the slow metabolism characteristic of snakes.
Boomslang Snake.
The snake featured in the video is a Boomslang (scientific name: Dispholidus typus). This is a venomous snake, with an average length of about 100-160 cm, and some can reach up to 183 cm.
This species has relatively large eyes, an egg-shaped head, with males displaying bright green coloration and a head mixed with green and black, while females may be brown. They possess fangs that are 3-5 mm long and nearly 0.5 mm in diameter. Notably, this species has excellent vision, comparable to that of a normal human.
Boomslangs primarily feed on small amphibians such as lizards and toads, occasionally consuming small mammals, birds, and bird eggs by swallowing them whole.
Today, the Boomslang is classified as one of the most venomous snakes in Africa.
Their venom not only causes external symptoms such as headaches, nausea, drowsiness, and anxiety but also leads to blood clotting disorders.
