Microsoft has recently warned users about a new computer virus that exploits a security vulnerability in PowerPoint, allowing hackers to infiltrate compromised systems.
On July 17th, Microsoft released a security alert regarding this virus through their Security Web Blog. The alert indicated that the PowerPoint virus is primarily distributed via email attachments. If users open the infected file, the virus is activated and spreads throughout the system.
In addition, hackers are currently attempting to trick users into visiting websites that contain malicious content or advertisements, which host files capable of exploiting the security flaw in PowerPoint.
This security vulnerability affects Microsoft PowerPoint versions 2000, 2002, and 2003.
Once successfully infiltrated into a compromised system, the PowerPoint virus installs an additional keylogger to record all keyboard actions on the infected system. Simultaneously, this virus opens the infected system to allow hackers to install further malicious software.
According to a security expert from Symantec, the PowerPoint virus will install a backdoor program that permits all other malicious software to be downloaded, enabling remote control of the infected system.
However, up to now, very few users have fallen victim to this virus.
Microsoft stated that they are currently working on completing a security update to address the aforementioned vulnerability. The security update is expected to be released on August 8th, in line with Microsoft’s regular monthly security update schedule.
