On May 16, Apple continued to release several new laptop models featuring Intel processors, demonstrating that the company is getting closer to its goal of completely replacing all IBM chip cores with Intel products.
Apple MacBook Pro
The new consumer MacBook line replaces the previous iBook and PowerBook (12-inch) versions of Apple, which used IBM’s and Freescale Semiconductor’s PowerPC chips.
The new widescreen MacBook (13-inch) is equipped with a dual-core Intel Core Duo chip, which Apple claims can enhance performance by 4 to 5 times compared to previous products. The new MacBook comes in two colors: black and white, and is priced between $1,099 and $1,499.
Apple has stated that it will complete the transition to Intel chips by the end of this year, at which point all of the company’s laptop products will feature Intel chips—IBM’s long-time rival.
