Arianespace, the largest space company in the world specializing in launching communication and weather satellites, announced yesterday (June 20) that it will launch Vietnam’s first telecommunications satellite into orbit in the first half of 2008.
According to Jean-Yves Le Gall, the CEO of Arianespace, the company will launch the VINASAT-1 satellite for the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) from the spaceport in Kourou (French Guiana).
Jean-Yves Le Gall stated, “This is a fierce competition with American and Russian competitors to secure this agreement. It is a very important contract and a strategic mission for us to establish operations in Vietnam, contributing to robust economic development there. This is also a strong signal for other countries in Asia that are currently awaiting Vietnam’s decision.”
The VINASAT-1 satellite is manufactured by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems (USA). It will provide telephone, television, and radio transmission services for Vietnam and countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
