The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has praised the emerging trend of energy diversification in many Asian countries through the development and increased use of renewable energy sources.
China is leading in Asia and globally in investing in the development of renewable energy sources, aiming for renewable energy to account for 10% of its total energy supply by 2010.
Currently, over 30 million Chinese people are using solar energy for hot water. India is leading Asia in wind energy. Countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines have also initiated strategic development programs for renewable energy, utilizing local plant sources such as palm trees and sugarcane.
UNEP emphasizes that renewable and clean energy sources are helping Asia tackle severe air pollution levels, while also creating a favorable environment to attract international investment in energy development in the region.
