The famous Asimo robot from Japan has been upgraded from entertainment to practical use as of December 13, with plans for this world-first walking robot to take on reception duties next year.
The latest Asimo prototype introduced in Tokyo can guide guests to meeting rooms, carry a tray of coffee, and push a cart with up to 10 kilograms of items.
The new Asimo resembles a child dressed in a white astronaut suit, with its running speed doubled to 6 km/h, and now it can run in circles and in a figure-eight pattern. Satoshi Shigemi, a Honda official responsible for robot development, stated: “The new Asimo can autonomously perform reception tasks or provide information guidance.”
During the press conference, the new Asimo, which stands 130 cm tall and weighs 54 kg, demonstrated its maximum running speed on stage and then delivered a tray with four cups to a coffee table.
