According to a study conducted by Temple University in Pennsylvania, babies begin to learn language at around 10 months old, primarily remembering the names of objects they are most interested in.
Previous research has confirmed that a 10-month-old baby understands about 10 words. Now, researchers at the Temple University laboratory continue to investigate how babies learn language.
In experiments involving 75 babies, researchers noted that infants have the ability to remember two new words within five minutes after being shown objects named by adults five times. Babies typically associate a newly learned word with the object that captures their attention the most, rather than the object being pointed out by the adult.
According to the researchers at Temple University, this response does not surprise them, as interest and enjoyment are always motivating factors for both children and adults in the learning process.
