Escaping to the Shore Just in Time, a Hyena Avoids a Deadly Bite from a Hippopotamus.
Guide Carlos Ismail was leading a tour at the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania when he spotted a hyena wading through a puddle.
The tense footage shows the hyena approaching a seemingly immobile hippopotamus, half of its body submerged under a layer of algae.
The hyena inches closer to the back of the hippopotamus.
After the hyena made contact with the hippopotamus, the large animal began to move. Sensing the danger, the hyena quickly turned and fled. At that moment, the hippopotamus also swung its massive body around and chased the pesky intruder away from the water. It even came close to catching the opponent with its powerful jaws.
Carlos noted: “This hyena was very lucky. It had gone out to hunt and probably thought the hippopotamus was dead, making it an easy meal.
It managed to escape just before getting caught in the hippopotamus’s gigantic jaws. I have been a guide for nine years and have never witnessed anything like this before. Although I have seen a hippopotamus chase a lioness. They are not afraid of anything.”

Many people still believe that hippopotamuses have a cute, chubby appearance, but the truth is they are extremely fearsome. Hippopotamuses are highly aggressive, and once they engage in a chase, they rarely give up. Additionally, their bite force is strong enough to kill both lions and crocodiles. Hippopotamuses can even chew through a watermelon as easily as you would eat a grape.
