It’s unfortunate for the unlucky warthog, innocent yet unable to find peace.
Habits are actions that an individual frequently performs repeatedly. They represent a type of behavior that tends to occur subconsciously. Habits play an essential role in the lives of all individuals; they facilitate daily activities without requiring too much time for thought, such as work or pursuing daily hobbies.
Not only humans but also wild animals have their own unique habits. For example, sea otters sleep in groups, holding hands or piling on top of each other to avoid being swept away by the current; hummingbirds have the habit of flying backward; North American raccoons often dip their food in water to wash it before eating; dolphins can use their calls to communicate with each other…
The innocent warthog wandered onto the trail, and two lions rushed in to “make a meal” of their prey.
It is not by chance that scientists release a wild animal back to the exact spot where it was captured; each wild species has its own habits of living and hunting in familiar locations. In these areas, wild animals know where is safe, where they can find food or rest without needing to spend time exploring or reacquainting themselves.
However, maintaining a habit is not always beneficial. Repeating a habit daily can easily lead to being “read” by others, and when bad actors exploit these habits, they can inadvertently become critical weaknesses, as illustrated in the story below.
During a journey to explore the wilderness at Kruger National Park in South Africa, Shannon Finnegan happened to capture the moment when a warthog was wandering in its familiar, seemingly safe area, but this time it was not so.
On that day, Finnegan drove down a quiet dirt road, rarely traveled, in search of something new and not boring. After about two hours of wandering, the group of tourists suddenly spotted two lions quietly appearing in the road. The deserted street, with no vehicles around, combined with the presence of one of Africa’s most dangerous predators, made Finnegan feel both frightened and excited.
Curiosity kept the group from taking their eyes off the pair of lions. It seemed to be a leisurely outing between an adult lioness and a younger one following to learn from the experience. Then, an innocent warthog wandered onto the trail, prompting the pair of lions to immediately switch into hunting mode, hiding in the grass, waiting for the opportunity.
And then, what had to happen, happened. The naive warthog, munching on the grass along the roadside as part of its daily routine, was unaware that “death” was watching its every move. Finally, when the moment was right, with just a few “basic moves,” the pair of lions added this plump warthog to their day’s snack menu.
