Virus programmers have recently succeeded in creating a new malware sample capable of infecting both Windows and Linux systems. This new malware sample has been reported to Kaspersky Lab.
Information on Kaspersky Lab’s official website indicates that the new malware sample has been proven to effectively attack both Windows and Linux PCs. Named Bi.a, it is programmed in a fairly basic manner and has limited capabilities. Bi.a can only infect files within the same directory, but it can affect various file formats across both operating systems.
Kaspersky reports that this is merely a traditional virus sample programmed to demonstrate the potential for creating a cross-platform virus.
“However, we must also warn that based on our experience, once a piece of code is proven to exist, virus programmers may quickly acquire that code and modify it to significantly increase its danger.”
Kaspersky has added this malware to its virus identification list.
