On June 11, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Head of the Microbiology – Parasitology Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, announced that his research team has successfully developed a biological burn dressing infused with moringa oil using fermentation methods.

The burn dressing is white with a thickness of 0.5mm and comes in various sizes depending on usage needs such as 10 × 10 cm, 15 × 10 cm, and 20 × 10 cm.
This biological membrane can be stored in normal conditions for several years.
In cases of severe burns, open wounds need to be covered with the dressing to prevent infections caused by exposure to the external environment.
The biological dressing is used to prevent complications from burn wound infections, facilitating early coverage of the wound. This, in turn, shortens treatment time and minimizes scarring on deep burn areas.
Burns are a common accident in daily life and work. In addition to skin damage, severe burns can cause internal organ dysfunction, leaving significant sequelae affecting movement, aesthetics, and the health of the patient. In Vietnam, the National Burn Institute in Hanoi receives about 400 burn cases each year. The primary cause of burns is hot water, with 165 cases, followed by other agents such as gasoline, oil, hot soup, acid, and quicklime. Source: National Burn Institute |
This preparation from the research team has a high water absorption capacity, strong adhesion, and is chemically inert, acting as a biological membrane that can temporarily replace skin.
According to MSc. Huynh Thi Ngoc Lan, a member of the research team, this biological burn dressing contains natural active ingredients for tissue regeneration and antiseptics.
Therefore, it does not contain risk factors such as direct toxins, allergens, pathogens, or foreign substances that could enter the wound.
The dressing is capable of killing 100% of bacteria commonly responsible for infections in open wounds such as burns or loss of skin. Simply applying the dressing to the wound without the need for additional materials provides antibacterial protection while promoting rapid healing by enhancing granulation tissue formation.

Notably, although this product is a daily change dressing, its cooling effect on the surface of the skin and low adhesion to the wound make it very easy to remove.
Additionally, the dressing has the advantage of not causing pain compared to other types of dressings currently used in burn treatment, such as sterile gauze or semi-permeable bandages.
To date, during the research on biological burn dressings, the team has produced approximately 1,000 sheets of the dressing.
These sheets are currently being tested at the Orthopedic Trauma Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City to observe wound healing rates, antibacterial efficacy, and levels of skin irritation…
Currently, most types of wound dressings need to be imported, costing between 15,000 – 30,000 VND each. The research team hopes that the domestic production of biological dressings will help burn victims reduce treatment costs.
