Four Mongolian Gazelles Born from Goats Survive in China: The World’s First Case of Goat-Gazelle Asexual Reproduction
No country has achieved asexual reproduction of Mongolian gazelles with goats, according to Zeng Yitao, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Experts say that asexual reproduction paves the way for the conservation of rare animal breeds. The Mongolian gazelle is an improved breed of goat found in China.
Zeng stated that scientists extracted body cells from the Mongolian gazelles and implanted them into the ovarian cells of goats after the goats’ genes had been removed. Six out of 26 goats became pregnant and gave birth to six gazelle fawns, with only two being stillborn.
